Chicken Shawarma Wrap ([Middle Eastern/Street Food])
A flavorful street food wrap from the Middle East, filled with juicy chicken, crunchy veggies, and creamy tahini sauce.
Ingredients
Meat Category
- 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast cut into thin strips
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Veggie Category
- 1 large red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 large cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 large tomato, diced
- 4 lettuce leaves
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
- 2 tbsp pickled turnips (optional)
Tahini Sauce Category
- 1/2 cup tahini paste
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
Chicken Shawarma Sauce
Mix the following:
- 2 tbsp pomegranate molasses
- 1 tbsp sumac
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
Recipe Steps
1. Marinate the Chicken
In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and garlic. Add the chicken strips and mix well to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
2. Grill the Chicken
Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Remove the chicken from the marinade, letting any excess liquid drip off. Cook the chicken for 5-7 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil to keep warm.
3. Prepare the Veggies
In a separate bowl, combine sliced bell pepper, cucumber, tomato, lettuce leaves, parsley, and pickled turnips (if using).
4. Assemble the Shawarma Wrap
Warm a large pita bread in the oven or on the grill. Slice the cooked chicken into thin strips. Spread a layer of tahini sauce on the bottom half of the pita. Add the sliced chicken, followed by the veggie mixture and a drizzle of shawarma sauce (see below
