Manti ([Uzbek/Traditional Central Asian])
Manti are traditional Uzbek steamed dumplings filled with meat, served with a side of sour cream and onions.
Ingredients
Meat Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup parsley, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
Dipping Sauce
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons chopped scallions
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Steaming Liquid
- 4 cups water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Manti Sauce (optional)
Mix the following:
- 1/4 cup kashkaval cheese, crumbled
- 2 tablespoons dried mint, chopped
Recipe Steps
1. Prepare Meat Filling
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, onion, parsley, garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
2. Assemble Manti
Divide the meat filling into small balls, about 1 tablespoon each. Wrap each ball in a thin layer of dough (see below for dough recipe). Make sure to seal the edges tightly.
3. Prepare Dough
In a separate mixing bowl, combine:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
Mix well until dough forms. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. Steam Manti
Place manti in a steamer basket, leaving space between each dumpling. Place the steamer basket over boiling water, cover with a lid, and steam for 10-12 minutes, or until cooked through.
Optional: Manti Variation
To add extra flavor, serve manti with a fried onion topping (see below).
